History/Background: Gilbert's entry at PH wiki and his history
Personality:
Gilbert, due to the events during Oz's Coming of Age Ceremony that led to Oz being thrown into the Abyss, undergoes a change—once shy, timid, and emotional, Gilbert becomes cold, reserved and ruthless in order to bring his master back. However, his composed exterior is revealed to be nothing more than a facade, as he still is caring and kind (not only to Oz but also the Rainsworths he has been working for ten years to bring Oz back from the Abyss), just like he was before the ceremony. Gilbert, aware of how much he has changed, isn't eager to talk about the things he had done in the past to Oz and believes that there's nothing left of who he was before. Soon enough, his master proves him wrong, though.

That said, his loyalty is a trait that defines Gilbert the most as a person and determines most, if not all his actions as well. Everything he does, every decision he makes is for the sake of his master to whom Gilbert is completely devoted. Starting with being adopted by the Nightrays to obtain Raven, a chain which power he can use to save Oz to spying on them and even being willing to turn against them or even kill them if his foster family or his brother were to somehow hurt his master, Gilbert's commitment is truly impressive. Moreover, the most prominent example of his loyalty is that he didn't hesitate to sacrifice his left arm using which he pulled the trigger of his gun and shot Oz when Glen Baskerville, his true master who could control Raven, had ordered him to do so. After that happened, Gilbert refuses to listen to Glen's orders and makes Raven burn off his left arm, making clear that Oz is the master he's going to stay with, even though that basically means that he'd be declared a traitor and hunted down. Moreover, he doesn't resent Oz for what had happened even once, which can be a proof of how genuine his feelings are.

Although Oz's well-being is definitely his highest priority, Gilbert is loyal to his other friends about whom he deeply cares—he just doesn't admit that so openly like in Oz's case. For instance, even though his relationship with Break involved being mutually used by each other at first, he doesn't hesitate to rush to his side when he was in a pinch during the battle with Lily and Fang in Isla Yura's mansion. He's genuinely worried about his younger brother Vincent who was later revealed to be cooperating with Baskervilles, despite his prior warnings that he'd stand against him if he was to hurt Oz. When Gilbert learns that Vincent thought of himself as a burden to him and that to make him happy he should erase his existence, without thinking much he snaps at him and scolds his brother for such foolish thoughts.

Throughout the story, Gilbert is often shown to struggle with his thoughts as he'd like to remember his past, but at the same time, he feels very insecure about recalling his lost memories. The reason behind this is simply that he dreads to change even further or, which would be even worse—he might have to leave his master side because of who he truly is and be no longer needed which is most of his biggest fears. Needless to say, it's the last thing he wants, especially after their reunion. However, when his fears turn out to be justified and when it is revealed that Gilbert is supposed to be bound to Glen Baskerville's will more than anyone else since he used to be his servant, Gilbert realizes that he wants to protect Oz and not Glen and overcomes his fears he was hiding deep inside.

During his service at both Baskerville and Vessalius mansions, Gilbert can be seen as a cheerful, naive and kind child who would eagerly help his master at all times. No matter how much Gilbert denies it, that part of him is not gone at all. Vincent, who knows about Gilbert more than anyone else since he retained his memories from hundred years before, would often point out that his older brother is kind-hearted and weak, yet so cruel at times. It is just how Gilbert truly is, no matter how hard he tries to hide it behind his exterior. Besides, his reserved, harsh and image is often ruined by his quirks, such as his fear of cats, his low alcohol tolerance or other little things like idolizing Oz's uncle Oscar who was really kind to his nephew's valet and who happened to be a smoker—therefore Gilbert followed him and started smoking as well.

Despite Gilbert's attempts to keep his emotions and worries intact, he's a really emotional person. When Break informs him that if Gilbert was to obtain Raven's power, he will be able to bring Oz back, guided by his own emotions, he agrees to help him out in order to obtain said power, even though he has to take Break's word for granted. Break's offer made Gilbert look like a naive person who clings to uncertain information, who he was as a child and still is to some extent.

On top of that, he's quite modest too. When Oz and Break decide to compare both Reim and Gilbert, they point out many of his good points which, more than anything, is enough to embarrass Gilbert who also starts put himself down in return. He would never boast about his skills, even though he's a hard-worker, a really good cook and pretty good at handicrafts. What is more, he's very perceptive and especially quick to notice other people's talents while ignoring his own—one time he taught Vincent how to shoot who happened to be really talented at it and surpassed Gilbert (who took a lot of time to get to his current level of gunmanship) in basically two months.

All in all, Gilbert might come out as cold and distant at first, but in fact, he's very kind and honest. It's not the only one contradictory thing about him—he's both selfless and selfish at the same time. As a faithful servant and a friend who worries and wants to protect not only about his master but also the people close to him, he's ready to make sacrifices and protect those who he cares about. He also continues to struggle with his own emotions and realizes that he'd like to stay by Oz's side at all times because he wants someone to depend on him. However, when the time comes, he's not afraid to face the reality and accept it and make a decision about his future on his own.

Carrier: A crow. It's just as scared of felines as it's owner, but putting cats aside, it's quite brave and loyal (this might have something to do with the fact that Gilbert's a good cook, though). Its favorite place to rest is on top of its owner's head, however, it's not picky and might choose to sleep on someone else's head as well. From time to time, it scoops some useless loot from the ground and brings it to its owner.

Magic Weapon: Black Silencer. A gun with a handle made of blackwood; it has two yellow, almond-shaped garnets that are embedded on both sides of the handle. Its power allows Gilbert to shoot bullets that seal the opponent's magic for a limited period of time (depending on the opponent—the weaker the enemy, the longer it lasts). The skill consumes lots of mana, so its usage is limited. Skill duration would increase over time and the amount of mana needed would become lower upon weapon mastery.
